KASPER AND BARBARA RENNER
Ancestors of Kasper and Barbara Renner were German-Russians (part French in some cases) who migrated from Lingerfeld Germanshiem to Chersan-ski-Russia as early as 1764. They left their native Germany because of political, economic and religious reasons. Poverty, overtaxation and religious discontent abounded. Russia, in contrast, with its vast plains and great freedoms as listed in Czar Alexander's Manifesto of May 20, 1804, seemed to be a haven beckoning their arrival. Czar Alexander and Catherine the Great offered the following freedoms to immigrants: religious freedom, tax exemptions for 10 years, exemption from military service, abolition of serfdom, and free land to be issued to every family. The Crown offered them 30-60 dessiatin (2.7 acres) of land with taxes of 15-20 kopecks per dessiatin to be paid after expiration of the exemption (100 kopecks = 1 ruble or 20-25 cents). This Russian utopia was shortlived, however, as the freedoms and provisions of the Manifesto were repealed in 1871.

Large families of 10-12 children were the rule rather than the exception and scarcity of land became a severe problem. This, along with compulsory military service for German-Russians with training consisting of strict discipline bordering on brutality, prompted volunteer exodus to the United States.
Jacob Renner, father of Kasper, sold out three times and started anew each time in an effort to make his living. In 1911 he decided to embark on a complete new beginning by immigrating to America.
Jacob and his wife Margaret (Geiger) Renner left Speier, Russia, and arrived in Philadelphia, June 29, 1911, along with their four daughters and five sons.

Elisabeth (now deceased) later married John Has-pert and had 10 children. Emilia married Fred For-ster — 14 children. She now lives in Richardton, N.D. Frank (deceased) married Tillie Berger — five children. Christ (deceased) married Ann Hoernor — eight children. Mary married Ray Zent — 14 children. She now lives in Bentley, N.D. Kasper married Barbara Hellman of Glen Ullin — five children. They are now living in Richardton. Ida (deceased) remained single. John married Eva Schantz and now resides in Spokane, Wash. Mike married Eleanor Gress — seven children and presently lives in Felton. Minn. Kasper is the only son of Jacob and Margaret Renner still residing in Richardton.
The Jacob Renner homestead, north of Richardton, was bought from a Mr. Gauge. When the Great Depression hit, the homestead was taken over by the Federal Land Bank. At that time, Kasper bought back the original homestead from the land bank. The farm has been in the family for 66 years and is now farmed by Bill Renner.

Kasper and Barbara have five children. C. J. Renner married Caroline Schreiber and is the International Harvester dealer in Richardton. They have one daughter — Carol. Bill married Rose Schreiber and farms the family homestead. They have five children — Eugene, Pat, Pam, Joan, and Mike. Bev married Jim Mayer and now lives in Dickinson. They have eight children — Jim, Barbara, Tina, Candice, Dave, Melinda, Michelle, and Lisa. Jerry is a Burroughs salesman residing in Bismarck, and has two children — Karl and Vicki. John married Bev Woeste and is a certified public accountant living in Sioux Falls, S.D. They have three daughters — Debbie, Heidi, and Becki.

Kasper and Barbara Renner celebrated their 50th wedding anniversary June 14, 1977. They lived on the farm until 1955, when they retired and moved to Richardton.
