NORBERT AND ARLEEN AMANN
Mr. Norbert Mark Amann, son of Philip and Julia Thomas Amann, was born Feb. 12, 1926 at Richardton, N.D., the fifth child of a family of seven. Brothers and sister are: Joseph, Eleanor Schulz, Magdaline Forster, Bill, Victor and Ervin.

Norbert attended St. Mary's Grade School and graduated from the Assumption Abbey High School. He entered the U.S. Army November, 1944 and served in the 31st Division, in the Philippine Islands. His tour of duty included time spent on the Islands of Mindanao and Leyte, and he was also awarded the Combat Infantryman's badge. He was discharged from the army November, 1946 and returned home to the farm. He farmed with his father along with farming the Rockus Fleck land, drove the school bus and later drove the Star Mail Route north of Richardton.

July 16, 1953, he married Arleen Meyer of Dickinson, at St. Joseph's Catholic Church by Monsignor George P. Aberle. Arleen is the daughter of Mr. and Mrs. John J. Meyer, pioneers of the Dickinson community. She has six sisters and four brothers: Sister Johnita, Fred, Ray, Barbara (Mrs. Nick Boehm), Dolores (Mrs. Albert J. Schmidt), Paul, Richard, Eleanore (Mrs. Richard Frederick), Lucille (Mrs. Richard Heenan), and Rose (Mrs. Dominic St. Peter). Arleen attended St. Joseph's Parochial Grade School and graduated from Dickinson Central High School. After high school, she helped her parents on their dairy farm for several years. She then attended Dickinson State College and taught rural schools in the St. Micheal area, north of Regent and also north of South Heart.

After her marriage to Norbert Amann, they lived in Riehardton in the Knights of Columbus apartments until 1956 when they moved to the Philip Amann farm 12 miles northwest of Richardton. After the death of Philip Amann, his mother, Julia, moved into an apartment at Richardton and Norbert and Arleen rented the family farm until 1964 when they purchased the farm.

1972, Norbert and Arleen decided to expand their grain and livestock operation and purchased the John Frederick farm, ten miles north of Richardton, and moved to this farm the same year. The reason for moving was that it was more centrally located and therefore, more convenient to operate the two farms.

Norbert has been a continuous member of the American Legion since 1946, is a third and fourth degree member of the Knights of Columbus, a mem-ber of the Taylor Veterans of Foreign Wars Post and the Eagles Club of Dickinson. Norbert has served on the Richardton Public School Board one term and Farmers Union Cenex Oil Board for three terms. He also served on the Stark County Farmers Union Board for 12 years, Knights of Columbus building committee for 12 years, and was a director of the Taylor Rural Fire District for six years. Arleen is a member of the North Valley Homemaker of north Richardton and was a leader for the North Valley Juniors 4-H Club.

Norbert and Arleen's family consists of five children, all born at the Richardton Community Hospital. Mark Dennis, May 3, 1956, is employed on his father's farm, and is presently attending the agri-business course at Bismarck Junior College, Bismarck. Nora Ann, July 24, 1957, attended Bismarck Junior College in 1976, and married Duane C. Amann July 10, 1976 at St. Mary's Catholic Church. She and her husband live in Richardton. Duane is employed with his father at Mischel Lumber Company, and Nora is production secretary at TMI Systems Design Corporation in Dickinson. Sara Marie, Dec. 4, 1962, Gail Kathryn, Oct. 20, 1964 and Philip John, Oct. 22, 1966 are living at home. All five children attended St. Mary's Parochial Grade School. Mark and Nora graduated from Richardton High School. They were all active in 4-H clubs and Farmers Union youth work.
