MR. AND MRS. JOHN ERDLE

John Erdle was born Nov. 30. 1887 in Mimmenhausen, Germany to John Erdle and Genevieve (Pfiender) Erdle. In 1912 when he was twenty-five he left his home, parents and two brothers Willibald and Otto and a sister Anne and came to America with a good friend, Joseph Enderle. They both settled in Arkansas. In 1918 he sold his homestead in Arkansas and came to Richardton, N.D. Probably because he heard there was better land here to homestead. But when he got here all the land was already taken. He then got a job working for the Abbey in the power house. He met Lucia Messmer. daughter of Peter and Magdalena Messmer. and they were married Feb. 3, 1920 in St. Mary's Church, Richardton; Father Justus Schweitzer O.S.B. officiating. They were blessed with nine children; one son died in infancy. Anne, (Mrs. Leo Bernhardt) Dickinson; Frank, Everett, Wash.; John Jr., Richardton; Joe, Everett, Wash; Otto, Mandan, N.D.; Rudy, Richardton; Bertha, (Mrs. Alfred Kubishta) Dickinson; and Zeno, Richardton.

After they were married John worked for John F Zimmermann and they lived on his place while they were building a home in town. (Allan Brost now lives on this place). They lived there until they had the opportunity to buy Marcus Heil's farm. They lived on this place until 1952 when John retired and moved to town. John Jr. and family still live on the home place. John Erdle passed away on Jan. 1, 1965 at the age of 77. Lucia, now 85 is still living at her home at Richardton.
