CHRIST WERT FAMILY
Christ Wert was born in Segel Gavisch, Hungary on July 15, 1875. He married Elizabeth Koppinger in Bresdawatz, Hungary and she was born in Sedshani, Hungary on Oct. 23, 1876.

Great-grandma Gertrud Wert was more or less the coordinator for the Wert family and the entire Koppinger family's venture to America to take advantage of the homestead land that was being offered by the United States Government for early settlers and development of the mid-west. This also included great-grandpa Matt Koppinger and his families. They landed at Baltimore, Md on May 30, 1903. Their sea voyage was experienced on a ship called “Castle in Bremmen”. From Baltimore they went to Mansfield, Ohio and then on to North Dakota, where they were met at Gladstone, N.D. by Carl Gartner.

Anton, Anna (Mrs. Anton Duppong), Christ, and Rose (Mrs. Frank Krauter) were born in Segel Gavesch, Hungary.

Christ Wert and his family homesteaded approximately one-half mile south of the Ludwig Krumenacker homestead, across the Stark Co. line in Hettinger Co. This was located on the NE ¼ of Sec. 6 in Rifle township and Gertrud Wert claimed the northwest quarter of the same section.

The Matt Koppinger families settled just a little northwest of this location. Most of this land is still owned by grandsons of great-grandpa Koppinger. Arriving here in 1903, a sod house was built in 1904, and this was occupied until 1911 when a frame house was built. Here on this farmstead were born Adam, George, Mike, Joe, and Marie Wert. Christ Wert and his family resided on this homestead farm until 1919 when he and part of his family moved to Glen Ullin, N.D. The Wert family were well known in the Lefor area during the early years after settlement in this area. The family also became members of St. Elizabeth's parish of Lefor during the days of the horse and buggy.

Christ and Elizabeth Wert moved to Mt. Angel, Ore. In 1937 where they lived until the spring of 1944 when they returned and Granpa Wert became ill and passed away Aug. 19, 1944 Grandma Wert then returned to Mt. Angel and spending a number of years there before returning to North Dakota where she spent the last few years of her life. She passed away July 1, 1960.
