EDMUND SCHATZ FAMILY
Edmund Schatz was born on Dec. 2, 1921 to Andreas and Theresa Isaak Schatz at his home south of Antelope, N.D. He had two sisters, six half-sisters, and five half-brothers. He attended a rural school and some high school in Glen Ullin. After that he went into farming and ranching with his father, raising sheep, cattle and grain. In 1944 he purchased the farm (30-137-91).

On October 14, 1944 he was married to Doris Mae Knudson of Taylor.

Doris Mae Knudson was born March 28, 1923 at Taylor to Arnold and Ethel Small Knudson. She attended a rural school south of Taylor and High School at Taylor, graduating in 1940 She attended several quarters at D.S.T.C. and taught rural schools in Morton and Stark counties. In 1941, her first year of teaching, she received a salary of $65 per month, spent $18 for board and room and the rest went to help pay off the loan for college. She taught for four years.

Four children were born to this marriage: Carmen, born in 1946 — she died in infancy; Gayle, 1948; Joel, 1951 and Garnet, 1952.

The children also attended a rural school until 1962 when the Heart River district joined with Richardton and they were then transported to town by bus. They all graduated from Richardton High School. They all belonged to a 4-H club during the growing up years and were kept busy with the various projects.

It was a “bright” day in 1951 when REA came with electricity for the farms and power to do so many jobs on the farm. We also appreciated getting telephone service.

Doris and Eddie have always enjoyed living on the land and doing their part to help feed the world. They have taken part in church and community affairs — belonging to the Neuberg church — teaching Sunday School, choir and also in the Gideon work. They were both 4-H leaders for many years. Eddie was clerk of the school board and also served on the Elevator board. They feel that North Dakota is the best place in the world to be and are glad to be a part of this great country.

The children: Gayle is married to Ron Kuhn and they live in Fargo. They have two children Karmen, nine and Mark, 4. Joel is now operating the farm with his father. Garnet is married to Phil Jones. He is in the Navy and at present they live in Charleston, South Carolina. They have two girls — Sarah, two and Theresa, nine months.
