ANDREAS SCHATZ FAMILY
Andreas Schatz, son of John Frederic and Fredrika Trautman Schatz came to America from Worms, South Russia in 1888 at the age of 12 years. The family first settled in Fremont, S.D. There were eight children: Fred, Andreas, John, Christ, Kathryn, Christina, Susan, and Lena. In 1897 the family came to Stark County and set up a homestead on land 17 miles south of Antelope (SE¼ 20-137-91).

Andreas homesteaded on (30-137-91) in 1898. In 1900 he married Christina Luithle, daughter of Jacob Luithle. Six children were born to this family: Andrew, Jacob, Anna, Emma, Emanuel and Martha. They also cared for a foster child, Molly for four years.

Andreas was a busy person. He was a “jack-of-all-trades”. For two years he and his brother Christ operated a butcher shop in Glen Ullin. On the farm he ran a cream-skimming station for several years and hauled the cream to a Hebron creamery Farmers from the area brought their milk for separating. He had a blacksmith shop on the farm and also did a lot of veterinary work, especially with horses. He was also the community “dentist” Many would come to get a tooth pulled when in pain.

His wife Christina, passed away in 1920 after an illness.

In 1921 he was remarried to Mrs. Theresa Isaak Schwartzmann of Golden Valley. She was a widow with five children: Art, Sam, Lena, Elsie and Clara. Several of the children from both families were the same ages so they had some good times. This made quite a family. Three more children were born: Edmund, Irene, and Esther. Besides this, they usually boarded the schoolteacher.

The children attended a one-room rural school. Some years there were as many as 32 pupils in all eight grades. Eight from this family attended for a few years and there were nine lunches to prepare. The older girls remember of having to bake 14 loaves of bread every other day and putting up over 100 quarts of chokecherry jelly.

The boys and girls worked at home and for others in the area until they were married and their father started them out on a farm giving each son a quarter of land and the necessities to get started.

The family attended the Bethesda church which was an important part of their lives. Andreas had a good voice and the congregation largely depended on his lead voice for the singing. Church was generally an all day affair each Sunday. Families would bring their lunch and have a prayer and song service in the afternoon . . . Neighbors would also get together in the homes to visit and do a lot of singing.

In 1944 Andreas and Theresa retired into Hebron, buying a house there. They sold the place to their son, Edmund. Andreas had a Henry J car and the first years they would often drive out to the farm to see how things were going and help out. They enjoyed 18 years together in the home in Hebron. Andreas passed away in March, 1962 at the age of 85. Theresa continued to live in the home there until she passed away in 1973 at 88 years of age.
