KARL SAILER FAMILY

Karl D. Sailor spent most of his life on the farm in Stark County. He was born in Russia to David and Louise Hiltz Sailer and came here with his parents in 1903. He had six brothers and one sister.
He married Emma Hilgeman on Jan. 7, 1921 and they began their married life in a two room house on his farm located on Section 34, Township 137, Range 91. Their four children were born at home with the help of a midwife.

They struggled through the “Dirty 30's” trying to make ends meet. Sometimes Dad worked for WPA. I remember him taking a team of horses and helping build a road across Siewert's hill.
We went to a country school 2½ miles across country from our home. We walked during nice weather and in the winter Dad would take us with the sleigh.

There was always a garden and Mother canned all that was there. In the fall the wagon was loaded with sacks of wheat and taken to town. Sacks of flour, sugar, coffee, and other staples were brought home for the winter.

However, through all the hard times we were very fortunate as there were no serious accidents or illnesses. Two of the boys were called to serve during the war.

In 1946 our parents moved to Hebron and Fred, the oldest son, stayed on the farm. Later on he left the farm and the land was rented.

Dad passed away on July 21, 1957. Mother remarried on June 8, 1967 to Fred Senne, who passed away on Oct. 25, 1969.

Their four children are still living. Fred lives in Corona, Calif.; Ben in Bismarck; Gust in Wishek; and Gertrude (Mrs. Reiny Mayer) in Dickinson. There are 18 grandchildren and 10 great grandchildren.
