THE KARL LUITHLE FAMILY
Karl Luithle was born Feb. 29, 1880 in Alexanderhilf, South Russia to Jacob and Fredericka Jose
Luithle. He attended a German school and took a course in shorthand. In 1889 at the age of nine
he journeyed with his parents, three brothers, Jacob, Fred and Henry, and four sisters, Caroline,
Christine, Katherine and Louise to the United States — arriving in New York after three weeks
aboard ship. From there they traveled to Scotland, S.D., taking up a homestead nearby. About a
decade or so later Jacob Sr. and family, excluding Karl, decided to come to North Dakota and
took up a homestead 23 miles southeast of Richardton (28 137-91). Karl remained in South
Dakota until 1901, when he married Elizabeth Fischer.

In 1904 Karl, his wife and one son moved to North Dakota to homestead near his parents, where
they built a sod house in which they lived until 1915. They then built a two-story wood house.
To Karl and Elizabeth were born 10 children: Karl H., Albert, Julius, Cornelius, Christof, August
and Benjamin. Three children died in infancy August died at the age of 18 years. At the present
time, Cornelius is the only son still living.

Karl Sr. and family farmed ranched and also purchased area cattle which were then driven by
horseback to the Hebron stockyards, loaded into train cars and shipped to slaughter yards in
Chicago. Many times Karl would travel on the same train in an adjoining passenger car to their
destination.

Karl Sr. was one of the first in the area to buy a Ford truck. It was purchased at Joseph Kilzer
Ford in Richardton which is now the oldest Ford dealer in N.D.

He continued farming and helped several of his sons obtain farms of their own. On Jan. 26, 1931
he passed away. Elizabeth died in April, 1934.
