STARK COUNTY HISTORICAL SOCIETY
With the urging and solid support of the Dickinson Chamber of Commerce the Stark County Historical Society came into official existence in October of 1974. The purpose of the society is to bring together those people who are interested in the story of the evolution of Stark County. It is believed that understanding the history of our surrounding is basic to the understanding and appreciation of our way of life in western North Dakota and in the nation. The major function of the society is to discover, collect, and collate any material which may help to establish or illustrate the history of the area.
The executive body as elected by the membership at its first general meeting consisted of President Russell Veeder, Vice President Caroline Buckman, Treasurer Eva Mutschelknaus and a twelve member board of directors. Much of the effort of the first year dealt with organizational matters; however the society did sponsor quarterly programs for the year including an informative and interesting presentation on the early medical history of Stark County and a tour of the Abbey at Richardton. In addition during its first year the society conducted an oral history project in the county. Under the direction of Dr. Alice Tirrell the society employed Georgia Fisher to conduct the project and Mrs Fisher successfully recorded and transcribed over sixty interviews: truly a remarkable project.
The second year of its existence witnessed the reelection of the president and treasurer and the election of Lorraine Dohrmann as vice president. The second year the society became involved in Bicentennial projects including the production of many one-minute radio spots highlighting various human interest episodes in the history of Stark County and a number of interviews from the communities of the county. Both were aired as public service programs over KDIX radio and television. Quarterly programs were also presented which were once again open to the general public.

Under the guidance of President Shirley Gilles, Vice President Caroline Buckman, and Treasurer Cheryl Drury the Stark County Historical Society devoted the bulk of its time and energy during its third year to the collection, editing and organizing of material for the first biographical history of Stark County. An editorial board of Lorraine Dohrmann and Earlene Thompson was selected and this board worked very closely with President Gilles and the entire organization of township and town chairmen for many months. In addition the society sponsored quarterly programs which were open to the general public. Among these was a program entitled “The Old West: Myth and Reality” which provided an evening of entertainment as well as information.

Although the Stark County Historical Society is young in terms of years, the membership, the board of directors and the officers have truly accomplished much of worth. The combined efforts of all involved have laid a solid foundation upon which to build.
