JOHN MARES (MARSH)
Enclosed is a copy of a letter from a paper that the Land Commissioners of St. Paul, Minnesota sent back to Europe to encourage more people to come to North Dakota. The paper was entitled, “Letters from Farmers of North Dakota, 1891.”

Dickinson, Stark Co., N.D.
Jan. 31, 1891
On Nov. 28, I reached here from Krisner, Russia, with $300 in money. I took me a homestead of 160 acres of free government land. I bought a yoke of oxen and a team of horses and have now, besides my oxen and horses, a colt, 18 head of cattle, and more chickens, ducks and geese than I can here give the number of. I have a good wagon, plows, hay mower, hay rake, and have a self-binder in company with my brother-in-law, John Kinslem. I have 80 acres of my homestead under cultivation and 10 acres of new prairie broken on my railroad land. I have enough wheat to last me two years and enough meat and other provisions for one year. I will need some coffee, sugar and other groceries, but will take coal into town and exchange for these. My farm is six miles from Dickinson where over 50 families of Bohemians are now settled and farming. The climate here is very healthful and the grasses are rich. We have plenty of coal, nearly every settler has a mine of it on his own land. If anyone writes me I will be glad to answer all questions, and I can testify to what I have said herein.
JOHN MARES

John Mařes and Antonia (Kinzel) Mařes raised five sons and two daughters: Emma married Frank Karsky; Barbara married Frank Buresh; Joe married Jennie McDonald; Frank married Mary Buresh; Vincent married Mary Ridl; Fred married Jennis Ridl and Anton married Minnie Pribyl.

Antonia (Kinzel) Mařes died June 25, 1927, she was 67 years old.

John Mařes remarried Anna Markel on Oct. 11, 1928. He was 67 years old at the time of his second marriage. Anna (Markel) Mařes died on Feb. 16, 1935, she was 71 years old.

John Mařes died on Feb. 3, 1943 at the age of 82.

John Mařes came from the old country and could neither read or write in English. When John had to sign his name, he told them his name. They wrote it the way it sounded and he endorsed it with an X. This is how the name changed from Mařes to Marsh.

Anton Marsh married Minnie Pribyl, the daughter of Stanley and Agnes (Bezdicek) Pribyl. Minnie was born in Czechohrad, Russia on Feb. 21, 1892, and came to America when she was four years old.

She lived with her parents and four brothers, north-west of Dickinson. The brothers were: Wencel, who married Antonia Dvorak; Anton, married Anna Kudrna and later married Mary Kostelecky; William married Ellen Pelton, and Albert was born on Aug. 7, 1905 and died on Sept. 5, 1966. He never married. There were also Vincent, born on Aug. 11, 1900 and died on Nov. 2, 1908, and a younger sister, Marie, who was born on Jan. 3, 1899 and died on Jan. 5, 1899.

Anton and Minnie were married on July 8, 1912. They homesteaded in N.E. Sec. 18, T. 140, R. 97. Here they farmed, ranched, and raised a family of three sons and three daughters: Hattie married Joseph Adamski; Charles married Eleanore Rambousek; Elsie married William Dvorak; George married Martha Rambousek; Dorothy married George Dvorak and Richard married Frances Volesky.

Hattie passed away on May 5, 1976.

There were also four other sons; Nicholas, who was born on April 8, 1928. He died shortly after he was born. Three other sons died at birth.

Charles married Eleanore Rambousek on Nov. 14, 1945 and moved to the Joe Oukrop farm in S.E. Sec. 4, T. 140, R. 97. Here they began a lifetime of farming and ranching.

The Joe Oukrop farm had been rented for 19 years prior to being purchased by Charles. It was rented by Joe Frederick, Anton Kovash, Henry Kudrna and Philip Jablonsky.

Charles and Eleanore have one son and one daughter.

Angeline was born on Oct. 4, 1946. She married Eugene F. Tuhy on Nov. 20, 1967. They have two children: Jon Francis, born on Oct. 27, 1972, and Amy Marie, born on Nov. 26, 1976. They reside in Dickinson where Gene is the manager of the Montgomery Ward Store.

Gene is a Viet Nam war veteran. He has managed a Montgomery Ward store in Huron, S.D., and was Auto Service Center manager for Montgomery Ward in Bemidji, Minn. Prior to being transferred to Dickinson.

Bernal, better known as Bernie, was born on May 3, 1954. He is living at home where he has rented the farm from his parents and is trying his luck at farming.
