GENE PELTON FAMILY
Eugene, is the name his parents, Nellie and Fenn Pelton, gave him when he was born in Dickinson, Jan. 2, 1914. Gene was the only child in his family, but he was fortunate to have the Burr Pelton girls living close and the E. D. Culver family that he always felt a part of.
Gene grew up on the farm his grandfather homesteaded in 1886, graduated from Versippi High School in the class of 1931, attended DSC and married Florence McQuay from Belfield in 1937.
Florence and Gene lived at Polson, Mont. the first year they were married, where Gene did carpenter work on the Kerr Dam. Their first child, Raymond was born while they were there. The summer of 1938 saw the end of the dry years in North Dakota and the crop was good so Gene gathered his family up and came back to help harvest the crop. Before the family got settled on the farm, the grasshoppers had arrived in hoards, and that was the end of another good crop. But the little family stayed and built a second house on the farm. A second son, Roger, arrived in 1940, Jerilyn was born in 1943, Virginia in 1946, Lowell in 1949 and the last of the half dozen arrived in 1951; that was Kent.
This is the 40th year for the Gene Peltons on the farm at Shady Bend on the Green River. Most of the years have been very good, cropwise and certainly for the family. We worked hard, had a dairy for 35 years, so there was always lots of work for everyone. Fenn and Nellie Pelton lived in their own house and worked hard till the end. They had spent 51 years together there.
Florence and Gene have been active in their community all these years. Ray, Roger and Jerilynn all graduated from Versippi High School. Then the high school was closed in 1961, and Virginia went to Campus High, and it too was closed so she finished her high school education at Dickinson High School, where Lowell and Kent also graduated.
Ray received his doctorate from the Univ. of Wyoming and has been the Superintendent of School at Velva tor nine years. Ray married his childhood sweetheart, Janice Kadramas in 1959 and they have three children Dawn, Jill and Gene. Roger is living in Rancho Palos Verdes, Calif. He married Arlene Bummer of Crosby and they have two little boys, Joel and Lance. Jerilyn married Charles Senger o Strasburg. They live in Kent, Wash. And have two girls, Marnee and Shana. Virginia married Keith Trzynka. They live in New England, and have two boys, Tom, and Ted. Lowell is married to Kathy York and they have three children. Tiffany, Micah and Samuel. Lowell is the fourth generation to make his home on the original Pelton homestead. Kent married JoLynn Lupo and they live at Watford City, N.D. where he is a vocational agriculture teacher and she manages a floral shop.
