After the Crimean War of 1854-1856, Russia had some land for settlement. Alexander II invited volunteers from Bohemia and Moravia to settle the northern part of Crimea Peninsula. The first group was given 60 desajatine of free land the second group was given 30 desajatine, that was 162 acres and 81 acres. Besides the free land, a free lot in the colony and a common pasture nearby. The land was good and the climate mild and so small grains, fruit, vegetables and grapes were raised. In spite of the beautiful country, many original emigrants left and also their descendants left Crimea for the northwestern USA.

After their marriage they farmed for 10 years and then left the land of the Czars and came to America. They arrived during the winter and stayed with his brother, John Kubishta, until spring when they built their stone house and moved to their homestead 12 miles southeast of Dickinson, on Antelope Creek. In time they increased their holdings. They stayed here until 1923, when they moved into Dickinson.

They had 12 children. Mary, born July 15, 1892, married Joseph Roller. Anna, born Feb. 2, 1893, married Joseph Schulz. Catherine, born in 1895, married Bergerin Roller and later John Schwindt.
