THE HARRY HUTCHINSON FAMILY
Harry Hutchinson was born Oct. 26, 1884 near Twin Brooks, S.D. in a sod house on the farm where his parents were living. His father's name was Silas and his mother's name was Eliza. They came to Twin Brooks from Huntington, Penn. There were seven children in the Silas Hutchinson family, three boys and four girls. Harry is the only one of these children still living at the present time.

Harry worked at the harness trade several years before he was married. He and Lula Roberts were married at Twin Brooks on April 24, 1907 at eight o’clock in the evening and left by train that same evening for North Dakota. They settled on a homestead about 16 miles north of Taylor, N.D. Harry broke up 84 acres on his homestead in two months using a single walking plow. Harry and Lula lived on their homestead until 1913 when they moved to the farm east of Taylor which he bought from his father. His son, Lee Hutchinson, now owns and operates this farm.

Harry's brothers, Frank and William, also had homesteads in the same area north of Taylor. Frank owned and operated a lumber yard in Taylor and one of the grain elevators. Harry managed the grain elevator for his brother for about a year or more. He rode back and forth to his homestead on weekends using a bicycle to cover the 16 miles. Frank built two houses in Taylor, one is presently owned by Roger Zimmerman and the other by Clarence Elkin.

There were seven children born to Harry and Lula Hutchinson, the oldest being Newell who lives in Battle Creek. Mich. Grace, now deceased also lived in Battle Creek. Howard lives in Bremerton, Wash. Helen is now living in Taylor, N.D. Harry George lives in Eugene, Ore. Lee lives on the farm east of Taylor. Ardath lives in Managua. Nicaragua. Harry has nineteen grandchildren and sixteen great grandchildren. Harry and Lula moved from the farm to the house in Taylor that his folks had previously owned. Harry and his dad moved a barn to the present location of the house and converted it into a three bedroom house. His folks lived in this house in Taylor until his father passed away. Harry and Lula moved into this house in 1947, Harry is presently living in this same house in Taylor. Lula passed away in 1960 at the age of 75 and Harry is still living and will be 93 on his next birthday.
