PHILIP S. KRAMER FAMILY
Philip S. Kramer was born in Stark County, Dickinson, N.D. on April 10, 1912. He received his formal education in Gladstone, N.D. While going to school he helped his father on the farm, which was six miles south of Gladstone. He later worked for the Glen Cassidy Dairy, south of Dickinson. He went to Billings, Mont. In 1935. Philip married Evelyn R. Bartell on Sept. 27, 1937 at Dickinson. After marriage they left for Billings, where he worked for Ryniker Sheet Metal, where he learned his trade from a German, Emil Rouf. Times were hard and wages low, but the people were happy. Hamburger was 19¢ a lb., loaf of bread 11$$, and eggs 7¢ a doz.

On Sept. 4, 1939 our son, Terrence John, was born. The war broke out in 1942. Sheet Metal workers were needed at the Bremerton Ship Yards, so Philip applied and was accepted working on ships such as the California, Saratoga and others. Tragedy struck on Sept. 2, 1943; our son was killed in a car accident. This dampened our hopes of staying on the west coast. On Dec. 8, 1943, our daughter, Karen, was born. On March 23, 1945, our son, Donald, was born. After the war in October of 1945, we traveled back to our homeland, Dickinson.

Philip had plans of opening up his own sheet metal shop. After working for his uncle, Philip, at Bogner Implement, he started his own business in an old stone shack. Progress was good, the old shack was torn down and built up, but it soon was too small. A new modern building was built, known as the Kramer Sheet Metal Works. Mr. Kramer was in business for 30 years. His son Donald has taken over the business.

Our children attended St. Joseph's Catholic School in the grades and Dickinson High School. Karen attended St. Catherine's College in St. Paul, Minn., and graduated in 1965. Donald attended State School of Science, Wahpeton, N.D. Karen married Gary Price on Dec. 28, 1965 at St. Joseph's Church, Dickinson. They have two daughters, Pamela, age nine, and Jennifer, age five. They are living in Glen Ellyn, Ill., where Gary is with Sears, Roebuck as an auditor.

Philip's father left his native country in 1897, taking up a homestead 15 miles south of Gladstone, N.D.

Mrs. Kramer's parents: Nick Bartel was born Sept. 14, 1883 at Platz, Ternes Commital, Bernat. He was a barber by trade when haircuts were 15¢. With not enough business in small Dickinson, he left barbering and worked for the Charles Bakke Construction. In later years he was a janitor at the Dickinson Court House.
