THE FRED REICH FAMILY
Fred Reich was born in South Russia Nov. 17, 1890. He came to America with his parents, Jacob
and Magdalena Reich, and four brothers and two sisters, 1897. They homesteaded near Eureka,
S.D., spring 1898. 1905, they moved to a new homestead on the Antelope Creeks south of
Antelope.

Fred Reich was in his teens at this time and was the son to be hired out. He worked for the Elmer
family near Hebron. They rewarded him for his diligent work with a new bike — quite a prized
possession in 1907. 1908 and 1909 Fred worked for the Buchli family south of Hebron. During
this time he hauled much of the stone for the foundation for the St. John's E. and R. Church,
Hebron.

Fred was married to Adelena Imhoff, 1914, at the Bethesda Congregational Church south of
Antelope. They started farming together on a quarter section of land received from Fred's
parents, Jacob Reichs. It was on this farm which grew to seven quarters that Fred and Lena
raised their family of seven girls and three boys.

1934 was a year for the whole family to remember. The severe drought had erased any hope of a
harvest. So Fred and Lena extended their truck box, filled it with bedding, clothes and food
supplies, loaded their children and headed for the World's Fair in Chicago. They went by way of
Hosmer, S.D., where Fred had spent seven years with his parents before moving to the Hebron
area. Fred relates, “I remember it cost $5 for the family to tour the World's Fair for a day, and 7¢
per person for a bus tour of the city. That trip which lasted three weeks cost us exactly $120. Of
course, we had taken most of our food with us.”

In 1943, Fred and Lena moved to Hebron and turned the farming interests over to their sons. 1946,
they moved to Lodi, Calif., where Fred began a masonry business. Nine of their children
followed them out to California. One son, Raymond, continued the family farm in the Antelope
area.

The mother, Adelena, was called home Nov. 18, 1962. Fred retired from the active masonry
business 1965. In 1967 he married Annette Jose in Lodi, Calif. where they still reside. Their
interests continue to be centered in their church, in visiting and in reading.
Albert, the oldest, married Lydia Fandrich. They farmed in California where they raised walnuts
and pecans. They have four children They now reside in Antioch, Calif.

Hilda married Sam Schwartzman. They farmed in the Hebron area and later near Galt, Calif.,
where they also owned and operated a grocery store. Sam was called home June 1967. Hilda
resides in Lodi, Calif. They had two children.

McDaniel is a chauffeur. They have two children.

Claire Reich Kolte lives with her daughter in San Mateo, Calif., where she operates an interior
decorating business.

1974. Hedwig resides in San Jose, Calif. They had four children.

they were married, 1943. They have two sons, Tim and Dennis, who with their families continue
in the farming and ranching business east of Richardton.
