JOE BERGER FAMILY
Joe Berger was born in Grant Co. on Feb. 13, 1928 to Jacob and Elizabeth Jantzer Berger. At the
age of six his father died and he lived with his mother five brothers and six sisters on a farm by
the Heart River northwest of the Saltzer Crossing. When he was 17 he worked for Yegen Dairy
at Bismarck then farmed with his mother and brothers for a couple of years.
On June 12, 1950, Joe was married to Florence Schaaf of Glen Ullin, in Morton Co. Florence
was the daughter of Mathias and Florentine Emter Schaaf. After their marriage, Joe worked for
the N.P. Railroad for seven years on the bridge and building crew. He then worked for various
farmers and ranchers until 1969 when they moved to Dickinson for two years. While in
Dickinson. Joe worked for Badinger Sand and Gravel.
In 1971 they returned to farming. They bought a farm belonging to Joe's mother which she had
bought from Roland Hirning (24-137-91). This farm at one time had belonged to John Sailer. In
the fall of 1976 they went into dairy farming.

On January 9, 1977 their house was completely destroyed by fire. The house had been built 64
years before. Soon after they bought a house from Fred Walth and moved it to their farm.
The Bergers have six children.: four sons and two daughters.
Joe Jr. is married to Leora Eberts, daughter of Anton Eberts of South Heart. They have one son.
Shawn. Joe is employed by Coca Cola of Dickinson and Leora works at Cenex as bookkeeper
and secretary at South Heart.

Jim is married to Beverly Messer, daughter of Tony and Kathryn Messer of Richardton. Jim is
employed at Great Plains of Hebron and Bev is a nurse at the Richardton Community Hospital.
Bill Laura, Valerie and Bob are at home. They all attend the Hebron Public School.
