SHIRLEY GILLES
Shirley was born in Stark County and received her elementary and secondary education in Dickinson.
Both of her maternal and paternal great-grandparents came to Western Dakota prior to 1900 settling in McKenzie and Morton Counties. Her grandparents with their sons, including her father, Kenneth P. Mann, moved from Hebron to Dickinson in the I920's and members of the family have remained in the area ever since.

After going away to school and living out of the state for several years Shirley, her husband, Roger and children Renee and John moved to Dickinson in 1974. Being aware of how vastly the area had changed since she grew up here, Shirley became very interested in preserving the historical roots that still remain in the county. She joined the historical society, served as a board member for two years and is now serving her second term as president. She has been involved in all facets of preparing the book “Stark County — Heritage and Destiny.”
