THE BREUM FAMILY
The four Breum brothers and their sister Mane left Norway and came to Stoughton, Wis. About 1880. Shortly afterward the entire family moved to Stark County, N.D. In the picture standing, from left to right are: Ole, Lars (Louie) and John, and seated are Martin and Marie. These five were the children of Hermund Torbjornsen, who later resided at the farm Breum in Jostedal Parish, Indre Sogn, Norway. Hermund was born March 11, 1809 in neighboring Luster Parish. On June 26, 1837 he married Berthe Olsdatter who was born in Luster Parish in Jan. 1812. She died of typhoid fever at Breum farm, Jostedal Prish on July 10 1857. Hermund Torbjornson Breum died at the same location on Sept. 10, 1882. Of their children who survived to adulthood and are pictured, Ole was born May 19, 1843. He married Augusta Ziner. After leaving Stark County they moved to Tacoma, Wash. Where Ole died on April 2, 1930. Lars (Louie) was born March 21, 1846. He married Gunhilda Larsen. He died about 1887, reportedly from typhoid while on a hunting trip to South Dakota. John was born May 21, 1854 and died Mar. 20, 1940. He had settled in Richardton, N.D. where he worked in real estate and loans through the bank. He never married. Martin Breum married Cornelia Buck. After leaving Stark County they returned to Wis. And are believed to have settled near Mt. Horeb where they died. Marie was born May 21, 1841 at Sperle, Jostedal, Norway where her brothers were also born. She married Anders Knudsen on Jan. 13, 1868 in Jostedal. She died near Taylor, N.D. on Aug. 5, 1888. Another sister, Cornelia, came to Taylor later. She settled on a homestead northeast of the present Breum farm. Not much is known about her.

While they lived in the Taylor vicinity, both Ole and Martin were charter members of the Taylor Lutheran Church when it was first organized on May 19, 1885. Ole was secretary and a trustee and Martin a deacon. The first recorded church service was held in one of the Breum homes in Oct. 1884.
