LAWTON E. OSBORN
Lawton E. Osborn, born in Dickinson, N.D., Oct. 2, 1901, to Ambrose Joshua and Kheda Frances Osborn. He graduated from Dickinson High School, 1920, became associated with his father in the photographic business, 1921. Upon his father's retirement, 1930, he purchased the Osborn Studio, operating same continuously until 1967 when Lawton (Buzz) Osborn Jr. became the owner and operator. He married Isabel M. McCannel in Minot, Mar. 25, 1935. Isabel was Stark County's first social worker in 1932 and 1933. Isabel assisted in the photographic business until 1951, when Lawton Jr. returned to become associated in the business.

Lawton Sr. has been very active in community affairs; serving 14 years in North Dakota National Guard, retiring in 1941 as First Lieutenant; member of the NDNG rifle team and range officer at Camp Perry, Ohio, 1932-1933; graduate Infantry School, Ft. Benning, Ga., 1932; military training and billeting officer for CAP training units stationed at Dickinson during World War II and battalion major, North Dakota State Guard. He was elected to Dickinson City Commission, 1942, serving as police and fire commissioner; appointed to Dickinson's first zoning and planning commission; past master, Dickinson Masonic Lodge; past exalted ruler and past district deputy grand exalted ruler, Elks Lodge; past president, Dickinson Rotary; served as junior and senior warden; St. John's Episcopal Church and Diocesan Bishop and Council; presently vice president, St. Joseph's Hospital Advisory Board. Throughout the years, he has been active in North Dakota and Professional Photographers Association of America as president, board member, convention speaker, and print judge: elected president of the Professional Photographers Association of America, 1961, after serving on the board for seven years; served as judge on national print juries and as chairman; appeared on numerous state and regional programs, including Canadian provinces; qualified for Photographic Craftsman, 1950, and Master of Photography, 1952. By invitation, selected for membership in the Cameracraftsmen of America, American Society of Photographers, and British Institute of Photography. Many of Osborn's western North Dakota pictorial scenes have been made up and installed in Fargo, Minot, Dickinson, Havre and Great Falls, Mont.

Many items of the original photographic equipment used by my father, Josh Osborn, were donated to the National Cowboy Hall of Fame in Oklahoma City and are displayed there in a studio replica of the early days and named the Osborn's Studio. Some of the glass plates have been donated to the Stark County Historical Society.

Lawton (Buzz) Osborn Jr. graduated from Dickinson High, served in the navy as a fighter pilot, graduated from the University of North Dakota, married Marjorie Kennedy in Grand Forks, 1947. They have three children: Katie, graduated from North Dakota State University and Wahpeton School of Science; James, presently attending University of North Dakota, majoring in business administration and marketing; Ann, in the eighth grade at Hagen Jr. High. Lawton Jr. is presently serving as Stark County Veterans Officer and in charge of Civil Defense.
