SAM BRAND FAMILY
Sam came to Taylor, N.D. in 1883 from Berne, Switzerland. He had a brother named Fred and three sisters; Rosie, Granny and Katie. Sam got married Jan. 1907 to Catherine Johnson. They had one son, Theodore, born June 20, 1908. He received his schooling at the Peddie School in New Jersey, graduating in 1926. He entered Yale University and graduated as a civil engineer, 1931. He died Nov. 12, 1933 at age 28.

Catherine taught school in this area for many years. She then furthered her education by attending Concordia College, Moorhead, Minn. and Valley City Normal School. She received her B.A. from Valparaiso University, Valparaiso, Ind. in 1898. She later entered medical school at the University of Michigan and got her degree in 1906.

1936, Catherine and Sam Brand adopted Leland and Charlotte Johnson, whom they had raised since the death of their mother, Mrs. Carl Johnson, and Catherine's brother, Carl. Sam Brand died, 1938 and Catherine Brand died, 1956.

Their adopted son, Leland, graduated from Taylor High School. He attended North Dakota State University, Fargo for three years in the field of agricultural engineering. He took the C.P.T. Program at N.D.S.U He took the Cross Country Instructor's Course at $$$ d Chamberlin School in Minneapolis. He received his commercial and instructor's pilot license September, 1942. He instructed in the war training service and the Naval Aviation Cadet Training Program. He was a flight instructor in Minot from 1943-1944. He married Gail Dasher in 1944. She was a legal secretary and IBM Operator in Minot before their marriage. They made their home at the Sam Brand ranch at Taylor. They had four daughters; Jo Carol, Lynn, Nancy and Barbara.

Jo Carol graduated from N.D.S.U. majoring in home ec. She taught school in Riverdale, N.D. She took training to be an airline hostess with Braniff Airlines in Dallas, Tex. She was killed in an air crash May 3, 1967, at age 22.

Lynn graduated from the school of social work at U.N D. in Grand Forks. She received her master's degree in psychiatric social work in Smith College, Northampton, Mass. She married Brian Tool from Fargo and they are both presently employed as social workers in Minot, N.D. They have one son, Brandon.

Nancy Brand graduated from the school of social work at U.N.D., Grand Forks, N.D. She received her master's degree from the University of Iowa. She married Joe Froehlich of Dickinson and they have one daughter, Jessie. Nancy and Jessie are living in Grand Forks where Nancy is the area supervisor of social services for the Grand Forks area.

Barbara Brand attended D.S.C. and married Dennis Dohrmann of Taylor. They are farming north of Taylor. Barbara and Dennis have three daughters; Tracy, Amy and Lori.

Leland and Gail Brand farm and ranch south of Taylor, S½ of 18-139-93. In addition to this, Leland does aerial crop spraying and is the charter pilot for the Interior U.S. Fish and Wildlife Service.

Charlotte Brand, Catherine's and Sam's adopted daughter, graduated from Taylor High School. She got her degree in home ec. at U.N.D., Grand Forks. She later received her master's degree in textiles and clothing from Columbia University, New York. She married El Bollyn from Chicago. Since then they have made their home in Roselle, Ill. Charlotte and El have three children; Jay, Karen and Chris. Jay is enrolled in pre-law at Northwestern University, Chicago and Karen is in the school of nursing. Chris has been touring and working in Europe since his graduation from high school.
