ALBERT BURWICK
Albert Burwick was born in Sioux City, la. To Nicolean Husby and Anton Burwick on Oct. 9, 1876. He was the oldest boy of a family of twelve children. Several died at an early age. The family moved later to Beresford, S.D. It was from there that Albert and his brother Ole traveled by train to North Dakota in 1905 to homestead in the Daglum area settling on Sec. 26 Twp. 137 R. 98 in Simpson township in Stark Co. Albert took the SE¼ and Ole the NW¼. Two years later Anton Burwick and his family homesteaded on the SW¼ and Will Hedge, a brother-inlaw, settled on the NE¼.

The Daglum store and post office were in the making just four miles away during this time. The homesteaders got their supplies and mail with horse and buggy. The lumber was hauled from Dickinson.

Albert built a small wooded frame house on his claim, and later added a stone addition to it.
Albert married Marie Peterson on April 19, 1912. The wedding took place in the stone house of her brother, Hans Peterson by Rev. Carl Ingebrigtson. Marie was born in Vik Sogn, Norway to Brita and Peter Hanson on Jan. 15, 1875. She immigrated to America in 1899. Her Uncle, Nels Romeriem, of Beresford, S.D. had sent her a ticket to come to their home. She worked at the Orphans Home at Canton, S.D. for several years before coming to North Dakota, to be a housekeeper for her three brothers, Hans, Ole and Halvor Peterson who had homesteaded in North Dakota, too. Marie could have taken up a claim on the SW¼ that Anton Burwick had taken, but instead she decided to go back to Norway to visit her parents. She returned a year later, bringing her sister, Sina, with her.
In 1915 Albert and Marie built a large new home. Anton Burwick was a carpenter, and helped with the construction of the new home. Many of the early settlers built new homes during the prosperous years.

Two children were born to them: a son, Alvin, and a daughter, Borghild. They attended school at the Peterson school house that was built in 1909 by the Hager and Sons” from Dickinson. The carpenters boarded at Anton Burwick’s home while the school was being built. Later Borghild attended high school in New England and college at Dickinson State Teachers College. She taught school for several in Stark and Slope County. She marned Everett Hanson of New England on Dec. 27, 1939. He is now deceased. They have two sons, Keith and Kenny. Alvin married Rose Dorval on March 25, 1940. They have four children: Joyce (Mrs. Dan Wilde), Andrew, Arthur and Delores (Mrs. Glen Homelvig), giving Albert and Marie six grandchildren.

Lean years came with drought, grasshoppers, loss of cattle and water problems. So in 1931 Albert and his family left the homestead and moved into Dickinson and New England for a short period. Later they located in the Gaylord area, south of Belfield. Marie passed away on Dec. 18, 1947. Albert then sold his place and moved to Post Falls, Id., where he lived until 1959. He passed away on Nov. 11, 1959. They were members of the Daglum Lutheran Church.
