JOHN KAUFMAN
John Kaufman is the son of Stephen and Maria Schank Kaufman, the oldest of six children whose parents homesteaded on Sec. 30-137-95, southwest of Lefor, in 1899. John was born April 23,1896 in Hungary. A sister, Mary, was born 1898 in the states. Brothers Pete born in 1901, Nick born 1908, Mike born in 1909 and Steve born in 1912.

John married Mary Becker, Oct. 27, 1919 and 1920 they moved into a farm house built by Grandpa Schank in 1903 and lived there till 1952, when retiring into Dickinson.

John was very active and well-liked in his community. He worked very hard, breaking horses, doing field work, hauling coal and such in the dry years. He was very fond of horses. He had a sorrel team, called Queen and Dan which he had in parades hitched to his buggy. He was president of the school board for many years and a member of K.C. Council 1515.

Mary Becker Kaufman daughter of Joseph Becker and Anna Hallof, second oldest of seven children born Feb. 15, 1901, died Sept. 3, 1967. Susan Becker Dorner, oldest, born 1897, died March 1961. Christ born Aug. 13, 1908. Betty born Nov. 24, 1911; Anna Becker Weber born July 30, 1913. Mable Becker Koppinger born April 15, 1915. Mary was an excellent homemaker, chore maid and you name it, she could do it. She was John's right hand all the way through. She did a lot of field work by horses, such as raking hay, cultivating corn and at the hay stacks. She could harness and unharness a team like any man, milked many cows by hand, gardening, raising many chickens to butcher and keep for layers canned all the meat and vegetables. All in all she could do most anything. She was an active Christian Mother, as long as she belonged to the Lefor Parish.

John and Mary were the parents of two daughters, Betty, Mrs. Art Barton of Whitefish, Mont.; Pauline, Mrs John Herold of Lefor, N.D. They are grandparents of eight grandchildren, and have three greatgrandchildren.
