GEORGE JUNKERT
George Junkert was born in Kussel, Russia, in 1894 to Frederick and Carline Reiser Junkert. He
came to America with his parents and family of two sisters, Katie and Eva, and three brothers,
Adam, Fred and Philip in 1901 and they settled at Fremont, S.D. Two years later the family
moved to Stark County, buying two quarters of land on (N½-22-137-91), 16 miles south of
Antelope, from Emanuel Dittus for $500, part of it being bought for $ 1.75 per acre.

The young boys worked out to help the family income George served in the U.S. Army in World
War I. After returning home he married Louise Luithle in 1919. Then his parents moved to
Hebron and George bought the farm.

Louise Luithle was born in 1900 to Jacob and Margaret Suess Luithle. Her parents had come
from South Dakota in 1898 and settled on a farm in (28-137-91). There were seven girls and two
boys in this family. Louise was born in a barn. Her parents were living in a section of the barn
while their house was being built and Louise was born there.

Four children were born to this family, all delivered by Mrs. Aisenbrey, the community midwife.
They are: Esther — married R. C. Auch, St. Louis, Mo. They have four boys and one girl. Edwin
— married Hulda Wetzel (deceased), Billings, Mont. They have one boy and one girl. Walter —
married Jean Wetzel, Mandan. They have four boys. Reuben — married Racheal Huber, Rancho
Cordova, Calif. They have two boys and two girls.

From 1930 to 1944 the times were rough and they were barely able to make ends meet, with
drought grasshoppers and low prices trying to discourage them, but they stuck with it and
conditions did improve later.

They had some wonderful neighbors. In March 1938, the roads were blocked and George had a
severe gallstone attack and needed to get to a doctor in Hebron, 25 miles away. His neighbors
pulled the car with a double team for eight miles to an open road. It took them seven hours
George had surgery and these same neighbors helped put in the crop that spring.

In 1953 George and Louise moved to Hebron renting the farm to their son, Reuben. In 1961 they
sold it to Reuben Winkler. They still live in their home in Hebron.
